Returning

Returning presents work by eight contemporary Australian textile artists: Elena Gallegos, Irene Briant, Julie Gough, Kathy Deprez, Petra Meer, Rosemary O’Rourke, Sara Lindsay and Tara Badcock.

Returning was originally held in The Barn in the City of Clarence, Hobart. The Barn is a heritage listed early 19th century stone barn which has been converted into an award winning multi purpose visual and performing arts space by Clarence City Council with assistance from the Tasmanian Community Fund.

Curator's statement

The artists selected for Returning all have an association with Tasmania AND have pre-occupations or connections which have drawn them away. Returning presents work which arises from their pre-occupations elsewhere. By showing us ‘other’ places Returning also tells us about ‘our’ place.

The artists represented in this exhibition exploit the power of textiles to speak to the viewer through diverse senses and associations.

Returning presents work which references ‘other’ places with an intimacy and sensuality available to textile artists by the very nature of their medium.

A new and lively interest in textile art has developed in recent decades often nourished by the activity of local community art centres and regional galleries. Returning presents work which will stimulate, challenge and refresh this interest.
