A winding stairwell, a closed window blind, a glowing globe … the room is bare except for bits of stuff that have been picked up off the floor and a broom by the wall that would keep it that way. It is empty except for swallows and angels.

Room parallels the architectural features of the gallery space with the interior space of the imagination.
Evoking domestic space through the generic features of a room – floor, wall, window etc – the curator, Derek Hart has brought together 7 artists from 5 States (under the auspices of CAST’s Exhibition Development Fund) whose work bends such familiar associations through the fantastical.
The ambient sound of Matt Warren’s video work, The Angels are Coming, sets the scene for an exhibition that offers an alternative, magical form of home renovation. The gallery/room appears bewitched: a staircase that compresses space; a broom that resists gravity; an old used light bulb mounted on the floor mysteriously comes to life in an atmosphere that crackles with enchantment.
