David Martin has worked extensively in the photographic industry and has experimented widely with photographic techniques and visual discourse. Martin has long been fascinated with ‘how photographs work’ - the way they are perceived and the history of the medium as it is continually evolving.
Martin completed a Diploma of Art and Design at the Bendigo College of Advanced Education in 1979, and a Bachelor of Art with First Class Honours and the University Medal at the Australian National University, Institute of the Arts, Canberra School of Art, in 1995. Martin was awarded a PhD at the University of Tasmania, School of Art in 2004.
In 2006 and 2007 Martin conducted curatorial research projects with the Robinson Collection of photographic material at the Devonport Regional Gallery.
Martin is included in the Australian Scholarly Publication The Burning Mirror: Photography in an Ambivalent Light, by Dr Melissa Miles, 2008. He is also featured in the forthcoming Monash University survey publication of contemporary photography by Dr Anne Marsh Look: Contemporary Australian Photography Since 1980.
Martin has recently concluded five years working with the collection of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and is now focused upon producing new bodies of work in the north-west of Tasmania. His work has been exhibited and collected nationally.
