Peter is one of Australia’s foremost furniture designer/makers. Now based in Maydena, North of Hobart, Prasil originally trained as a toolmaker during the early 1970s in Copenhagen, Denmark. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with First Class Honours in Furniture Design from the University of Tasmania, Hobart in 1994, where he later gained a PhD in 2000.
His work is represented in public and private collections in Australia and overseas, including the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. His solo exhibition SDI (Strategic Defence Initiative) toured Hobart, Sydney and Brisbane during 1999 and 2000.
Prasil has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions since 1989 in Australia, including the national touring exhibitions, Past Tense/Future Perfect in 1998 and Future Factor in 2002-2003. His work has been featured in three SOFA art fairs in New York and Chicago, represented by Despard Gallery, Hobart. He has received numerous awards, including the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Seppelt Contemporary Art Award in 1999.
Prasil’s idiosyncratic objects often blend sculpture with furniture design, replace function with humour and combine precision craftsman’s skills with improbable materials.
