James Vaughan completed a Bachelor of Education (Art) at the City Art Institute in Sydney where his interest in architecture, the process of building, mechanical 'fitting and turning' and the industrial aesthetic gained energy. In 1988 he relocated to Tasmania where he found inspiration in 19th century Tasmanian industries such as Australia's first brewery, Cascade, gas production in Hobart and Launceston and the vast infrastructure of the early hydro electric schemes.
As a furniture maker, his work has always been motivated by sculptural concerns. Fundamental to Vaughan's practice is his application of original methods of cabinet making. This has often necessitated creating his own specific tools and machinery. His technical mastery of traditional skills consequently creates a solid foundation for more experimental work.
