Julia de Ville
Location: Victoria
Origin: New Zealand

New Zealander, Julia deVille's interest in life and death emerged early.  Her father, a hobby scuba diver taught her to scale and gut fish at the age of five.  As a child she dressed up in her grandmother's fox-fur stoles, where the mouth would open up to bite onto its tail.  She was fascinated by the idea that this creature was once living.

In 2002 deVille was introduced to Rudy Mineur, a talented taxidermist who shared her love for the beauty in nature.  de Ville would bring recently deceased birds and what ever else she could find to Rudy's work shed to be shown the delicate procedure of taxidermy.

In 2003 deVille enrolled in an Advanced Diploma in Gold and Silversmithing at NMIT.  She knew instantly that jewellery was the perfet medium to express her ideas about mortality by incorporating taxidermy into her pieces.

To prove her dedication to her art form, deVille has donated her body to Germany's renowned Institute for Plastination.  After her death, it will be dissected, filled with a special polymer and preserved for exhibition.
