Elizabeth Newman lives and works in Melbourne where she completed a Bachelor of Arts (Painting) at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1984. Newman first exhibited in the seminal George Patton and University Galleries at the University of Melbourne, quickly establishing her practice by inclusion in exhibitions at such venues as the National Gallery of Australia, Monash University Gallery, Contemporary Art Centre, Adelaide and Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces where she also completed a studio residency. In the late 80s and early 90s Newman exhibited with City Gallery (Anna Schwartz), Melbourne and Roslyn Oxley 9, Sydney. In the 90s Newman gave up her art practice to become a practicing Lacanian psychoanalyst, before returning again to art making in 2001. Subsequent to 2001, Newman’s practice has been represented in the Adelaide Biennale and her work exhibited in galleries including the Heide Museum of Modern Art, Neon Parc, Anna Schwartz Gallery and Sarah Cottier Gallery. Newman’s work is represented in major public and private collections in Australia. She is represented by Neon Parc, Melbourne.
