Peter Battaglene
Location: Tasmania
Peter Battaglene established Watermark Pottery in Hobart in 1991, focusing on the small scale production of fine tableware and individual ceramic works in porcelain. Over the last five years he has developed an additional element to his practice - Watermark Design - focussing on the design and production of pattenated and embellished concrete, glass and stone surfaces for architectural and urban landscape applications. Peter began his training in the arts in Sydney, undertaking an apprenticeship as a potter at Ross Downie Pottery (1983-84) and Kinka Pottery (1984-85). Building on this grounding in traditional craft skills, he undertook a Batchelor of Arts (Vis.Art) at the City Art Institute in Sydney (1987-90). In 1990 he moved to Tasmania to pursue post-graduate studies, completing a Graduate Diploma (Art, Craft & Design) (1990-91) and an Honours degree (1994-95) at the University of Tasmania. Peter's ceramic work has been exhibited in a number of group exhibitions, including Design Island (Sydney Opera House, Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery and Design Centre Tasmania, 2004), Coming Home (CAST, Hoabrt, 2005) and Applied Arts - Form + Function (Brenda May Gallery, Sydney, 2006). He has also held a number of solo exhibitions, most recently Deep Blue at Manly Museum and Art Gallery (Sydney 2007). Recent commissions include projects for Hobart City Council, Wiamea Heights Child Care Centre, Scottsdale High School, Walford Terraces and the Tasmanian Analytical Services Centre.
