Gottfried is a German artist and academic. He is an exponent of Generative Photography and Concrete Photography. Like concrete art of other media, his work does not reference anything outside itself. It does not seek to represent or abstract anything in the real world - it is what it is. Generative Photography, a term introduced by him in 1968 with an exhibition in Bielefeld, Germany, explores the pictorial potential inherent in the photographic process, seeking to create a new understanding of the image produced by an apparatus originally intended for the purposes of reproduction - sometimes even playfully challenging that very apparatus.
