PURPOSE

To make a significant contribution to the formation of a vibrant visual culture connected to the contemporary world of ideas and providing Tasmania with new art, new artists and new audiences.

CAST was established to:

> promote, present and assist contemporary art, craft and design in Tasmania
> create a national and international profile for Tasmanians in contemporary art
> facilitate a touring program aimed at public galleries, other exhibition sites and new venues
> promote critical discourse and documentation of contemporary and experimental art and associated activities
> encourage research towards exhibition development and new art practice in Tasmania

CAST’s primary roles are the development, presentation and touring of exhibitions of contemporary art.

CAST is a not-for-profit Australian Public Company run by a Board of Management incorporated in 1992. CAST is based in Hobart where it maintains a gallery and offices but it also has a statewide brief to service the needs of arts practitioners and the audience for contemporary art. CAST is recognised as a key institution within a network of institutions of its type around the country, and is a member of the body Contemporary Arts Organisations (CAOs) of Australia, the peak body in this area of cultural activity, and National Exhibitions Touring Support (NETS Australia).

The Board of CAST's primary aim with the Centre for Contemporary Art and Design (CCAD) initiative is to develop a plan towards securing a strategic location to house a peak presentation and service organisation for new and experimental art, craft and design in Tasmania.
